Everyone remembers Wendell, right? We first met him when Our Heroes stumbled onto a heist he was pulling with his brother and a couple of other juvenile delinquents near the beginning of our 61st storyline, "Standard Operating Procedures," and after he started hanging around, he and Princess Beryl got to know each other during our 67th storyline, "Adventures in Spider Sitting." He then helped her when she grew up suddenly and had to become the Queen of the Fae in the middle of our 72nd storyline, "Crash Positions," and they've been friends ever since.

Yeesh! It's like every time we turn around in this comic, someone's talking who does or doesn't have a soul or free will or something like that! Yeesh!

If it's the next morning, that means we've moved on to Monday, February 13th, 2006. Ah, the march of time!

Norma joined the staff at Haven Space just before it opened near the beginning of our 41st storyline, "Grand Opening." That was four months ago for our characters and nine years ago for us.

Still, this wraps up our 106th storyline. Next week, things continue with storyline #107, "Warts and Bunions."

Let's see: the conversation at Mrs. Teasdale's dinner party took place near the end of our 103rd storyline, "Sticking Plasters," and we got a sidelong glimpse into Lady Mab's lack of a love life way back at the end of our 59th storyline, "In Shining Armor."

A New Story for a New Year

So:

I've got a story, "Metaphysical Therapy," up on the webzine Aurora Wolf if folks might like something cute and light for the New Year. It started life as a 700 word flashfic I put together for one of the contests at WriteOff.Me, but now it's more than five times its original length. Ah, the joys of revision....

It wasn't until I got involved in the fanfiction community that's sprung up around the current My Little Pony cartoon show that I learned the literary term "shipping," the phenomenon of fan writers putting characters into relationships that don't actually exist in the show itself. When a writer becomes convinced that characters in the show truly and secretly are in one of these relationships, it's said that the writer is seeing things through "shipping goggles."

I should just start drawing Howlett wearing a pair of those...

As for the comic here, we've got one more week of chapter four, then we're on to chapter five, oddly enough: "Warts and Bunions," it looks like it'll be called, and it'll carry us into the middle of February.

Let's see about getting everyone onto the same page for the New Year, huh? That arachnid in the hat, for instance: folks might remember that she's Lady Mab, Alban's aunt and the Security Chief for the Household Fae. It's been just over a year since we readers last saw her, near the middle of our 98th storyline, "Jurisprudence," but that's only been 8 days for our characters.

Of all the characters in the comic who I expected to quote Lee Van Cleef from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Howlett was maybe the last one.

     Well, it's a New Year. Anything's possible!
